Alwyn AY McConnell

February 16, 1933 — June 20, 2015

Alwyn York (A.Y.) McConnell Plantation, FL passed away peacefully on June 20, 2015 and while the world lost a great man heaven gained a beautiful guardian angel. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1933 he was proud of his Alabama roots and was an avid University of Alabama football fan. His family moved to West Palm Beach when he was a teen and he attended Palm Beach High (Class of 1951) where he earned the nickname “The Bull” by starring on offense and defense for the Palm Beach High football team and was voted “Best Looking” something he reminded us about often. He also excelled at baseball and basketball there. After high school he attended Virginia Military Institute, Auburn University and The University of Miami where he graduated. Additionally, he was very proud of his service in the United States Army (1953-1955). He retired as a District Manager with Southern Bell after 30 years of service, during which time he also served as the President of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce and was involved with the Rotary Club and the Better Business Bureau. Upon retirement he started his own business and was the owner/operator of The Mail Center for 28 years in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is survived by Betty Jayne (B.J.) his loving wife of almost 58 years. A.Y. met the love of his life at the legendary The Hut drive in West Palm Beach. He is the loved father of Lori (Gary) Moore, York McConnell & Tom (Jennifer) McConnell, proud grandfather of Mason, York, Sean, Kacy & Tommy. Further, he is survived by his brother T.J. (Annie) Davis, and sister Vicki (Brad) Brannon. He had a great sense of humor and always had a positive attitude even during these last few years when he was a fighting his illness. We will all miss him saying “he is doing great” when he answered the phone. He extremely passionate about and loved all animals, children and the less fortunate. Visitation, Tuesday 5-8 p.m. at the T.M. Ralph Plantation Funeral Home 7001 N.W. 4 Street. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Benedict Episcopal Church Wednesday 11:00 a.m. burial to follow South Florida VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth. In his name donations may be made to the Humane Society of Broward.
