Mary Annie Haddad Hayek, Ph.D.
1925-2015
Dr. Mary Hayek passed to our Lord peacefully on Tuesday night, October 6, 2015 surrounded by her family. She was a woman of beauty, elegance and intellect, tempered with strength, wisdom and love. In her professional life, she was Dr. Mary Annie Haddad Hayek, a police psychologist for the City of Miami, Hialeah and Coral Gables, along with her own private family practice. As a caring and giving psychologist, she helped countless patients work through life's challenges. As a mother, she was a constant source of pride and inspiration. Mary was a friend and confidante to many, whether family, friends or strangers. She loved deeply and passionately. Her love was infectious and gathered many to love her in return.
Mary was a devout Catholic, deeply spiritual and accepting of all. She and her husband, Jim, were founding members of St. Jude Melkite Catholic Church in Miami, Florida. She was also a founding member of St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church in Weston, Florida. Mary and Jim had a deep devotion to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, and helped Danny Thomas in the early days raising funds for the hospital. She leaves a space that cannot be filled. She is now amongst the angels protecting us. Mary’s favorite biblical passage was Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me". Her farewell expression to her family was always, “I love you forever into eternity. Keep the angels around you”. Mary was born in Paterson, New Jersey, on February 13, 1925, the second daughter of the mighty Haddad clan with six brothers and one sister. In WWII, she was honored as a War Bonds top salesperson. When her brother Joe brought his buddy, Jim Hayek, home for dinner, it was the beginning of a wonderful love that became the start of the Mary and Jim Hayek family. They married on August 12, 1945 and moved to Miami, Florida. Mary always said that she did not know how to boil water when they married, but within a short time, she became an expert Arabic cook who would put on a magnificent spread at a moment’s notice. She was the most wonderful, nurturing mother imaginable and protected her family like a mother bear with her cubs. When the kids were grown, she wanted to expand her intellectual horizons and resume her education. She started at Miami Dade Community College and never stopped until she became a Doctor of Psychology in 1978. Her professional journey became a lifelong quest. Mary is survived by her three children, George (Gema), Jim (Kristin) and Joanne (Jim), and her three grandchildren, James Anthony (Ann Marie), Taylor and John, and one great grandchild, Caitlyn, along with numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Mary’s favorite charities: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or EWTN Television (Eternal Word Television Network). Friends will be received on Sunday 4:00-7:00 PM at the T.M. Ralph Funeral Home 371 NW 136 Avenue Sunrise, FL 33325. Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be Monday 10:00 AM at St Katherine Drexel. Interment will follow at Woodlawn South, Miami 954 587-6888.
