Prominent Ft. Lauderdale attorney John G. George died Sunday, November 8, 2015 at home; John was 69. John was born January 24, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. Proceeded in death by his loving parents George and Diana George, and his sister, Maria. After graduating high school from Oakland Academy in Newburg, New York, John joined the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and worked as an airplane mechanic. John was assigned to the 405th Maintenance Squadron while stationed in the Philippines. With an honorable discharge as a Sargent, John returned and attended Queens Borrow Community College in Queens, New York. John then went to Syracuse University and graduated Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa with honors in Political Science in 1978. In 1981, he received his Juris Doctor, and was a member of the first graduating class from Nova Southeastern Shepard Broad Law Center. His practice areas included Civil, Criminal, and Constitutional Litigation. John was an active member of the Southern District of Florida General Bar since 1981, and the Florida Bar and Broward Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 1983. In 2009, John was admitted and qualified as an Attorney and Counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States, and has been admitted and qualified to many of the Federal Circuit Courts. John’s passion had also extended to Syracuse University’s Men’s Basketball program where he traveled and supported the team. Further, he and his wife were also Marlin season ticket holders. He was an avid golfer, and a member at the Lago Mar golf club. John was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Ft. Lauderdale, and he supported and strongly advocated for the American Heart Association. Lastly, John was a member of the Broward County Courthouse Breakfast Club, and loved “oldies” music.John is survived by his wife, Diane George, of thirty-two years; their son Edward George,Daughter Dina Hagan with her husband Greg, and their three children, Jonathan, Mathew, and Andrew; Daughter Victoria Dodson and her husband William, and their three children John, Briana, and Alexandra. John is also survived by his two siblings; Sister Irene Vasiliou and her husband Bill, and their children Konstandiana Vasiliou, Iakovos Vasilios and his wife Nancy Worman, and George Vasiliou and his wife Elena with their daughter, Ariana; and Brother Demetrios (Jimmy) George and his wife Ronnie, and their son George George; and his nephew Theophanis Bays.
John will be terribly missed by his loving family and friends. The South Florida legal community mourns the loss of a great litigator, and, more importantly, a champion of civil liberties. Funeral Mass will be on SATURDAY, November 14 at Noon at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Interment will be Monday 2:15 PM at South Florida VA National Cemetery.
