Herschell Rudolph Goodwin, Jr.

With his wife and daughter at his side, Hersch Goodwin, 73, passed away at Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation, Florida, on November 24, 2015. He is the beloved husband of almost 20 years to Charlene Goodwin, caring father of his only child, Jill Goodwin Mortensen, of Copenhagen, Denmark, and fun-loving papa to two granddaughters, Vera Marie Mortensen and Ella Margareta Mortensen of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is also survived by his loving sister, Martha Goodwin Lemasters, of Vero Beach, FL, seven loving nieces and extended family members.
Hersch was the third child born to Nellie Elizabeth Goodwin and Herschell Rudolph Goodwin Sr. on July 24, 1942 in Miami, Florida. He graduated from Stranahan High School in 1960 and worked at the Sun Sentinel for more than 41 years, most recently in the Retail Advertising Accounts Department, until his retirement in 2003.
Hersch had a quick wit, was a great storyteller and was passionate about sports, history and animals. He played for the Fort Lauderdale Tigers amateur adult football team in the 1960’s and ranked as a 5th degree black belt in Shotokan-style karate. He was a very active member of the Florida Karate Academy during his entire adult life, both as a teacher and tournament judge.
Hersch, may you rest in peace. You were a great friend, and your good humor and optimism will be forever missed.
The family will host a pre-service reception at the T. M. Ralph Funeral Home on NW 4th Street in Plantation on December 12, 2015, at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Hersch’s name to the Humane Society of Broward County.
