Martin Raymond Abbaticchio, 86, of Pompano Beach, FL passed away February 15, 2016. Born in Ellwood City Pennsylvania on May 27, 1929 to the late Horace J. and Adelaide Abbaticchio. In the early years he was gifted with personality and ability giving him the ideal childhood. He was an excellent athlete, starring in high school football and as a semi-pro player. After joining the Army he played football in Japan receiving an outstanding football award from General William Dean while serving our country during the Korean War. In Korea he was involved in some of the worst fighting of the war. During one battle he became stranded behind enemy lines and was listed as missing in action. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star before returning to the U.S. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh earning a degree in accounting. His early career path was in teaching and then as an accountant. He went on to work for the City of Plantation as the Director of Public Works. He later worked for the City of Ft. Lauderdale as a building inspector and was chosen to help assess the structural damage from Hurricane Andrew. In retirement he loved playing golf, weight lifting and jogging.
He was one of five children and is survived by his brother Robert with wife Taffy of New Smyrna Beach, FL and his sister Elizabeth with husband Richard Graham of Fairless Hills, PA. He will be greatly missed by his three sons Marty of Plantation, FL, Mark of Belmont, NC and Mike with wife Valerie of Plantation, FL.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 22, 2015 from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM. A Prayer Service at 11:30 AM at the funeral home. Interment will take place with military honors at 1:15 PM at South Florida Veterans Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida
