Evelyn Marie Christensen Eielson, 103, of Plantation, Florida, passed away November 7, 2016, at the Seasons Hospice unit of Memorial South Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She was born on June 20, 1913, in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Marie and Hans Christensen. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Eiel Stanley Eielson.
Evelyn is survived by her three children, Faith L. Eielson of Naples, Florida; Eiel S. Eielson of Bend, Oregon, (Cindi Eielson); and Sharon Eielson Marvel (Daniel Marvel) of Delray Beach, Florida. She is also mourned by her loving grandchildren, Heather Freschi Humphrey (James C. Humphrey), Adam Davenport Bradley (Heather Little Bradley), and Benjamin Bradley (Laura Royster Bradley), and her great grandchildren, Morgan Eve Humphrey, Grace Anna Humphrey, David S Bradley, and Justin I. Bradley.
Evelyn worked for many years as the office manager of Dictaphone Corp. in Hamden, Connecticut, before retiring to Islamorada, Florida in 1978. After her beloved husband Stan passed away, Evelyn moved to Covenant Village of Florida, Plantation, Florida, in 2001 where she remained enjoying an independent life until her recent, short illness.
Throughout her life, Evelyn loved gardens. No matter where she lived, she nurtured plants, encouraged growth, and found the presence of God in her gardens. Evelyn believed in maintaining an active lifestyle and regularly took walks, collected cuttings, and made plants grow. She enjoyed swimming daily and was very involved in social activities in her community. Evelyn was always a willing participant in party festivities, including dancing and performing skits with friends and relatives.
She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church, Woodbridge, CT.
Evelyn requested that this portion of Thanatopsis by William Cullen Bryant be included in her memorial:
So live, that when thy summons comes to join
The innumerable caravan, which moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave,
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.
A private memorial service will be held for family members in December.
