Sheila Barbara Alphonso was born on August 24, 1932 on the beautiful island of Trinidad and Tobago in the city of North Trace to loving parents Teddy Baptiste and Alberta Baptiste. She attended North Trace Government School in North Trace Village. As a young woman, Sheila ventured on a journey from her island home to Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 8th 1969. She envisioned a better life for her 7 children and herself, working tirelessly until they were all reunited in Brooklyn, New York. Her preserving work ethic led Sheila to a variety of work in America. Her final work home was at American Express in Plantation, Florida. As an initial processor, Sheila gave many dedicated years to AMEX until her retirement. Sheila, also affectionately known as “Barbs” was a world class traveler, she enjoyed taking cruises and touring many countries over in Europe. Sheila had a creativity that shined like her spirit, showcased by her beautiful knitting and crocheting work. Gorgeous blankets, hats, scarves, baby apparel and more were crafted by her delicate hands. In her leisure time, she often enjoyed playing bingo, card games and puzzles. Also, Sheila enjoyed the sweets sounds of calypso and soca. She could be seen rocking to the sweet rhythms of Kitchener and Sparrow. Sheila made everyone around her feel well loved and was good for a laugh because she had such a great sense of humor. As a Virgo, she embodied style and class with a touch of feistiness. On the evening of March 3, 2017, eighty-four-year-old Sheila passed away peacefully from this life surrounded by family. Sheila was preceded in death by her sisters, Claudine and Sylvia and her daughter Lenore. Sheila is survived by her six children; sons, Michael and Lennox; daughters, Marilyn, Maureen, Roma and Roselyn; 18 Grandchildren; Brandon, Christopher, Krystina, Keenan, Kenyon, Gerard, Joanne, Gary, E.J., Steven, Cheryl, Rachel, Lenworth, Cameron, Kirkland, Rayanna, Nichole and Nicholas. 13 great-grandchildren; Andrew, Chase, Arianna, Kylee, Sojourn, Kaiden, Amir, Nevaeh, Skyler, Josiah, Latrell, Jasmine and other relatives.Visitation, Saturday, March 11, 2017 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.
