Alfred Binns

Retired Boston teacher and former Jamaica and International cricketer dies in Florida at age 88.   Alfred (Allie) Binns born July 24, 1929 in Kingston, JA, the youngest son of “Major” M.J. Binns and Lydia Constance Binns ( Ne Rance).   Married Henrietta Elizabeth Binns (Ne Harrison) August 3, 1959 in Boston, MA.  The couple has two daughters, Kathleen Stakermann, Jacqueline Binns, and a granddaughter Cristina Stakermann.   From 1944-1947 Allie represented St. Georges College, his high school in Cricket, Soccer, Softball, and Track, and in 1946 and 1947 was captain of the Cricket and Football teams winning the Manning Cup in 1945, and the Oliver Shield in 1947.   He went on to represent Jamaica in Cricket against Trinidad, Barbados, Guiana, India, England, Australia, and Pakistan in 1950-1957. Allie was selected to play for the West Indies against India in 1950 at the Oval in Trinidad, and later was the West Indies Wicket Keeper against Australia, New Zealand and Figi.  He is the first West Indian Cricketer to score a Century against an Australian team that toured the West Indies in 1955.  He scored a record 149 runs in a partnership with Collie Smith at Melbourne Park, JA.   In 1968 while attending college in Boston he was a member of Team USA that played against Pakistan in New York at Randall Island Stadium. He went on to represent Harvard University at Harvard Commons against a team from India.  At the time he was an intern at Harvard School of Public Health.    Allie attended St. Aloysius School and later St. Georges College, a Catholic private school in Kingston where he graduated in 1947. He began his College career in the US by attending Wentworth Institute in Boston where he graduated with an Associate degree in Building Construction Engineering in 1959.  He went on to Northeastern University and received his B.S.edu. in 1962.  Four years later, he was awarded his M.edu.  Administration from Northeastern.  A year later in 1966 he was inducted into the Kappa Delta Psi honor society at Northeastern.   In 1966 Allie began his teaching career at the Tewksbury Memorial High School in Tewksbury, MA where he spent three years in the Industrial Arts Department before moving onto Bridgewater Raynham Regional High School in Bridgewater, MA. For three years Allie was a Metals teacher and Co-op Student advisor for the Sweetheart Plastics Industry in Wilmington, MA.   In 1969 he joined the Boston School system as a Drafting teacher in the Dearborne and the McCormack schools. He retired from the Boston Public School system in 1985 after teaching there for 17 years and settled down with Henrietta his wife, and children in Weston, FL.  In March 2009 Allie was awarded an honorary BS.ed. in Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology.Cremation Arrangements by T.M.Ralph Plantation Funeral Home 954 587-6888
