Barbara A Serko, 85, of Plantation, FL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 24th, 2019, surrounded by loving family. Formerly of Chicago, Il, and a resident of Plantation since 1969, Barbara is survived by her son John, daughter-in-law Kimberly, and grandchildren Andrew and Megan, also of Plantation. Barbara is also survived by her nieces Barbara Custer Wilson of Orlando, Kerry Kozak of Burlington, Iowa, and Julie Kozak of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Barbara was preceeded in passing by her husband John, her brother Frances Kozak, and her sister Dorothy Custer. Barbara was widely known and well liked in Broward county. She completed her education at Nova University, earning her Masters in 1979 and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1981. In her private practice, Barbara not only saw private patients, but also performed psychological testing for many of the local police departments, including Coconut Creek, Sunrise, and the Broward Sheriff's Office. Barbara was chosen Woman of the Year in 1987 by the Broward chapter of the Business and Professional Womens' Clubs, and was also chosen to be the official Psychologist of the Miami Dolphins. After celebrating her business success, Barbara retired from her private practice to be a full-time grandmother, which she excelled at. When not fussing over AJ or Megan, she was often seen at the Plantation Nook or later the Plantation Diner in the mornings having breakfast with the many friends who loved her dearly. Barbara's final resting place will be with her beloved husband John, at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. In lieu of flowers, her family would request a donation in her name to the Alzheimer's Association at Alz.org.
