Fort Lauderdale lost a native son with the passing of Bruce Remsburg. Born in east Fort Lauderdale, Bruce grew up diving and fishing in the ocean. When polio struck, he used its heavy sand shoreline to strengthen his legs back to health. Despite polio, he became a star athlete at Fort Lauderdale High School playing baseball, basketball and golf. His athleticism earned him a college scholarship to Rollins College. It was here that he met his wife, Jege, with whom he would share 46 years and four devoted children. Born to Luther, real estate pioneer and county commissioner, and Mildred, a homemaker, Bruce enjoyed the outdoors and sports. After college, he and his father turned some open land in Park East into a cattle operation and built homes on lots they owned nearby. As development crept west, the ranch was sold for housing and replaced with a larger parcel in Oakland Park, then by a much larger parcel in what would become Coral Springs. In the mid seventies development drove the ranchers north towards Okeechobee where they purchased separate ranches. Bruce’s ranch, X-Bar, named after his brand and college fraternity, the X Club, brought him years of great joy as a gathering place and playground for his family. Many know Bruce best as an accomplished golfer. He had many great times on the course, made many friends and held many titles throughout Broward County. He even bought the family home as a result of a golf pairing. He and some golf friends joined together to found Lago Mar Country Club, which has been a source of great enjoyment. Thoroughbred horse racing ran in Bruce’s blood. He, both his parents and sisters, June Brumbaugh and Sharon Marable raced horses at Gulfstream, Calder and Hialeah taking their winners outside the region to race. Among them they had many remarkable animals and memorable wins including a Florida Breeder’s Cup Champion. Bruce was active in the community where he helped found Security Bank, which became Landmark Bank and then Bank of America. He served on the Foundation Board of Saint Thomas Aquinas High School and maintained membership in the Cattleman’s Association and Florida Farm Bureau. Bruce was a long-standing member of the Fort Lauderdale Methodist Church. In 2003 the Fort Lauderdale Historic Society named Bruce Pioneer of the Year. He supported many charities and foundations and was always an active supporter of his alma maters, personally hosting receptions in his home on the eve of every reunion of his class for the Flying L’s. After the passing of Jege, Bruce married dear family friend, Tyler Harvey. They enjoyed an exciting life of worldwide travel and of entertaining friends in Fort Lauderdale and their Grandfather Mountain retreat. Their fast-paced lifestyle slowed somewhat in recent years. Two months ago Bruce became ill and did not recover. He is survived by his wife, Tyler Harvey Remsburg, and sister, Sharon Marable (David), sons Bill (Robbi) and Andy, daughters, Katherine (Chris) and Mary Beth (Brian), step children, Roger Harvey (Tonya) and Hattie Hess (Joe), grandchildren Christian (Caroline) and Jim Sautter, Jessy, Rebecca, John & Jack Remsburg, Abby Reardon (Nick), Matthew & Katie Guernier, step grandchildren, John and Tyler Hess, Caroline and Emily Harvey and great-grandchildren, Brayden and Charlotte.
