Video recording of Edward A. Smith Funeral Mass at St. Gregory Catholic Church Edward Anthony Smith Jr., 91, of Plantation, Florida, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Ann T. (Kelley) Smith in 2010. He is survived by his two children; Patricia (Smith) Summersfield, her husband, Jonathan M. Summersfield and grandsons Kyle and Kieran; and Edward A. Smith III, his wife, Cherish (Youngblood) Smith and grandchildren Emma and Logan. He is also survived by his niece, Nancy (Nelson) Underwood, her husband, Joe and their daughter, Jolene. As a chemistry major in college, he earned both his B.S. and M.S. degrees as a college fellow and taught organic chemistry. His final thesis was on the oxidation of electricity power transformer oil. In 1953 his first job was with Penn Drake Oil where he formulated oil hydraulics for the military. Edward eventually achieved the title Senior Plastics Engineer for Allied Corp. where he worked as a chemical research and development engineer for the rest of his career. A devout Catholic, Edward’s entire life was dedicated to his faith both inside and outside of the church. He was member of the Third Order of St. Francis for 65 years, much of that time as active prefect. One of his greatest gifts was his incredible musical ability with which he served in every capacity imaginable from music director, choir director, funeral and wedding organist, piano concerts, to dressing up in a tuxedo and entertaining the “old folks” in nursing and veteran homes; many of whom were younger than he! One of the kindest, most authentic, loving and devoted people God ever created, he will be deeply missed by so many. That actuality will only be exceeded by the fact that anyone who knew him is now truly “happy for him” as he is now home.
