Eleanor Claire Mathis, 83, passed away on May 28, 2021 with her family by her side. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many. Eleanor was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 24, 1938. Her family moved to New Jersey when she was a young girl. She attended school in Millville, NJ where she met future husband, Jay.
Eleanor and Jay married on August 28th, 1955. During their 65 years of marriage they lived in New Jersey, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, and Florida. They had four children, Cathy, James, Suzanne, and Amy as well as three grandchildren, Brian, Katelyn, and Erin. They were also blessed with four great-granddaughters, Isabella, Anna, Elizabeth, and Billie.
Eleanor worked as a childcare assistant in Pennsylvania while her children were young. The family then moved to Florida in 1977. They joined the church of Our Savior Lutheran in Plantation, FL that same year. She began working as the aftercare assistant at Our Savior Lutheran School in the late 90’s where she worked for about 10 years.
She enjoyed bowling and was a member of local women’s leagues for many years. She also enjoyed shopping for and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid baseball fan and loved the Phillies as well as the Marlins.
She is survived by her husband, Jay Mathis; her children, Cathy May, James Mathis (Kathleen), Amy Mathis; her grandchildren, Brian May (Mary), Katelyn Thielen (Michael), and Erin May; and her great-grandchildren Isabella May, Anna Thielen, Elizabeth May, and Billie Thielen. She is reunited in heaven with daughter Suzanne Mathis and son-in-law William May.
