Elizabeth "Betty" M. Wirth

Elizabeth M Wirth (Betty), 76, of Plantation FL passed away on April 10, 2023, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Betty was born in May of 1946 to Roderick & Regina McLean in Portland, Maine.  After her brother’s untimely passing, they moved to Florida.

She graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School and went on to graduate from Webster College in St. Louis, Missouri.  During her studies, she met her husband on sabbatical in Louisville, KY and her college roommate, Anna also later became her stepsister.   

After Betty graduated college, she started her teaching career in Louisville and then later in Broward County after moving back to Florida.  Betty taught mathematics and computers and was the South Plantation HS Mathematics Department Head for many years before going back to college and earning another master’s degree in Media Science at Florida State University.  She then continued as one of the Ely High School Media Specialists for many years before retiring.

Once Betty retired, she pursued her love to travel.  She and her close friend, Barbara, made many overseas trips as well as trips throughout the United States.  She enjoyed seeing the beauty of the National Parks and visiting all 50 states.  She also enjoyed returning to the northeast for all the family reunions with her cousins.

Betty was also part of the Vizsla dog community, where she enjoyed camping and the outdoor activities with her dogs.  She spent a lot of time traveling in her camper to the events.

Betty always kept busy and in between her activities she enjoyed crocheting and sewing and making blankets and baby bonnets that she donated.  She also loved to read and always had a book or two on hand.

Betty was involved with her church and participated in bible studies and headed up the book discussion at Saint Gregory’s Church. 

Betty was very giving and caring of others and set a great example for her children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.

Betty was preceded in death by her father Roderick McLean, her mother Regina McLean Griesemer, her brother Charles (Sandy) McLean and stepfather, Joseph Griesemer.

Betty is survived by her former husband, Bill Wirth, her two children Christopher Wirth and Elizabeth Wirth Reale, and son-in-law Mark Reale.  She also is survived by six grandchildren, Jonathan (Maddie), Natalie, Christopher, Stephanie, Jessica, and Reagan.

A Memorial Mass will be held on May 5^th, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 North University Drive Plantation, FL 33324

Betty will be laid to rest at Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth, Maine.
