Evelyn Ann Boyd, age 90, of Plantation, Florida, was called home to heaven on March 1, 2025. Over the years she made a loving home wherever her husband’s career took the family, but her eternal home was prepared by Christ himself.
Evelyn was born June 9, 1934, to Ruth Evelyn (Pope) and William Otho Steele, in her childhood home in Dugger, Indiana. After graduating high school, Evelyn moved to Arizona, where she later met and on August 28, 1954, married Wallace Francis Boyd, her partner and best friend for life. Together they raised two girls, living in states as far flung as Arizona, Missouri, California, Nevada, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, before retiring to Linton, Indiana, near Evelyn’s childhood home. Each move she turned into an adventure, modeling contentment, practicing joy, and serving God as Sunday School teacher, nursery worker, and vocalist.
Evelyn’s creativity was best known to her family. There were oil paintings from her youth; countless sewing projects, embroidery, and cross stitch; hand-painted stencils on the walls; hand-stained woodwork throughout the Linton home; and pages and pages from adult coloring books. Evelyn spent hours on her computer designing cards for family and enjoyed singing at home, in the car, and at church. Her creativity naturally spilled over into her church life, too, as she made visuals for VBS, Sunday School or anything else needed for White River Baptist Church of Bloomfield, Indiana, and joined, in more recent years, the card crafting ladies of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Plantation, Florida.
Whether she was creating, reading, puzzling, following sports, studying God’s Word -which she did daily for years- or going to God in prayer, Evelyn’s life reflected a grateful heart, a steadfast love for God, her family, and friends, and a humble faith.
She never judged, never criticized, rarely complained – unless the score during a sporting event was lopsided – and always loved, always encouraged, and always placed her hope in God.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters Ann (Dr. Harold) Tallant and Linda Root; grandchildren Nathan (Jensey) Root, Amanda Tallant, and Jessica Heller; great-grandchildren Oliver Hobbes Root, Cameran Heller, and Jackson Heller; and sister Betty Drake. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Robert O. Steele, and sister Lora Lee Stinogel.
