Evelyn Elizabeth Schmid, 94, of Plantation, FL, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2020,
following a brief illness. Evelyn was born January 26, 1926, in Monaca, PA, the daughter of
Jesse Edward Hagerty and Colleta Helen Jena. She graduated from Monaca High School and
worked as a bookkeeper at First National Bank and as a secretary at Pittsburgh Screw & Bolt
Corporation, both located in Monaca. Her longest employment was as secretary for St. Stephen
Lutheran Church in Pompano Beach, FL, from 1964-1986.
In June of 1949 she married Rev. James Millard Allan at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Glenshaw, PA. He preceded her in his untimely death due to cancer in August of
1956. She married Rev. David H. Schmid in December of 1957 at St. Mathias Lutheran Church
in Jeanette, PA.
In 1964 the family moved to Florida, where Evelyn wholeheartedly and permanently fell in love
with her adopted state. She was a skilled seamstress and an avid gardener with a fondness for
hibiscus, lilac, orchids, and the butterflies that were drawn to her yard. Later in life, the tabebuia
tree outside her apartment was a favorite. Evelyn was also fond of drawing and was skilled in the
arts of origami and calligraphy. She was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church and a lifetime
member of the Lutheran Church Women. All who knew her remember her for her sincere
generosity of spirit, her love of all god’s creatures, her constant intellectual curiosity, and her
photographic memory.
Survivors include her children Catherine A. O’Neill (Patton) of Greenville, SC; Cynthia L. Allan
(Deborah) of Pittsburg, KS; and Jonathan D. Schmid of Pittsburg, KS. She also leaves behind
two grandchildren, Michael P. O’Neill (Hillary) of Asheville, NC and Christa D. O’Neill of
Atlanta, GA, along with many nieces and nephews, some of whom called her their “second
mother.” She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. David H. Schmid, and her sisters, Arlaine
Hagerty Haffey and Arletta Hagerty Colonna.
A private service will take place at All Saints Lutheran Church in Tamarac. In lieu of flowers the
