Jane Louise Burgess

Jane L. Burgess, age 78, of Davie, Florida passed away May 20,  2023.    She was born November 2, 1944, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Robert C. and Martha Grund.  Jane lived her last 58 years in Florida. 

Jane was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law and friend to all. She had a smile and wit that would light up a room.  She was SMART, kind, passionate and cared deeply for friends.  She made a positive impact on the lives of many.    

Jane loved gardening and grew all types of plants.  She ran a landscaping business with Luis Barrios for eight years, planting and maintaining the yards of some of Fort Lauderdale’s most prestigious homes and businesses.  In 1988 she decided to slow things down and leave the “labor” behind.  She turned her attention to growing 80 varieties of herbs and antique roses at “Jane’s Herbs and Things” at Etling Nursery in Davie, Florida.  

She raised herbs for culinary, fragrances, and medicinal purposes. She enjoyed interacting and educating her customers through plant  shows and seminars to educate them on the uniqueness of each herb.   

She had a special place for all animals – dogs, cats, rabbits, fancy rats and chickens. Jane loved pug dogs, fishing in Chokoloskee and traveling.  Her hobbies included reading, sewing and cooking. Later in life she started painting.  

Jane’s motto in life was “God put us on earth to take care of others”, at age 60 she adopted three children.  

Jane is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Martha Grund, her husband Stephen M. Burgess, and brother Robert Grund. 

Left to cherish her memories: Ann (Scott) Shapiro, Meagan (Brent) Wickum, Eric (Samantha) Burgess, Alexia Burgess, Jessenia Burgess, and Stephen Burgess; grandchildren Aaron Shapiro and Emily Shapiro; great grandchildren Chance and Brandon Shapiro; and brother Steve Grund; her puppy dogs handsome Henry and Scruffy, and her cat Meow Meow.   

She will be greatly missed.  Until we meet again….my darling Jane.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at T. M. Ralph Plantation Funeral Home 7001 NW 4 Street Plantation, Florida 33317. 

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. 

A celebration of life will be at the Fort Lauderdale Small Boat Club from 1:00 PM  to 5:00 PM.
