Kathleen Wehby (née Kathleen Bruce) was born in Ballards Valley, St Mary, Jamaica on May 25, 1924. Middle sister to older brother George and younger sister Gloria, she lived with her siblings and Mother, Mildred Bruce, in Port Maria after the loss of her father as a child. Throughout her childhood she made frequent visits to spend time with her “little cousins,” as she fondly referred to her 5 Clemetson cousins – Jean, Marie, Shirley, Doreen, and Lisa – the daughters of her Aunt Alice Clemetson.
At the age of 17, right out of school, happenstance brought her into the employment of PC Vendryes and Son, where she was to go on to spend almost 60 great years working for a boss who happily assumed the role of father figure in her life, which he honored unswervingly until his death.
At the age of 23 she married Dudley Saleem Wehby in Kingston, Jamaica, and their union produced 3 children – Maria, David, and Denise, while additionally raising their niece Lois and nephew Anthony as their own. In 1984 she lost her husband to cancer.
In 1991 she left Jamaica for the United States, which became her home for the rest of her life, although she made many happy visits to family and friends in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands up until the year preceding her death.
In addition to her own children, she was instrumental in the rearing of her 15 grandchildren, and then later, her great grandchildren. Throughout her life she was the cornerstone and mortar of her family and shoulder and ear to her many friends.
After a short illness, she passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, surrounded by her family. She will always be remembered for her strength, resilience, work ethic, tremendous wit, and storytelling savvy. She had an anecdote from her life handy for any situation.
Her family is thankful to everyone who offered prayers and messages of comfort at the news of her passing. Funeral arrangements will follow shortly, and because her greatest love was service of the underprivileged, we ask that if so inclined, in lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation in her honor to the Archdiocese of Kingston Charity Fund.
