Luis Antonio Alcaide

Luis Antonio Alcaide Santiago, de 94 años, falleció en paz, rodeado de su familia, el martes 6 de junio de 2023 en Tamarac, Florida.

Luis nació en La Vega, Santo Domingo, República Dominicana el 13 de diciembre de 1928, hijo de José Alcaide Cordero  y Carmen Santiago Alcaide. Sus padres, provenientes de Hatillo, Puerto Rico, se habían ido a Santo Domingo donde tenían una finca. Debido a los disturbios políticos y la persecución por parte del gobierno, huyeron de regreso a su ciudad natal de Hatillo en 1931.

Después de terminar la escuela secundaria, Luis se alistó en el Ejército y sirvió durante 4 años. Durante este tiempo, comenzó a comunicarse por cartas con una de las compañeras de cuarto de su hermana mientras ella vivía en la ciudad de Nueva York. Aunque Luis y Enelda (nativa de Chitré, República de Panamá) no se conocían personalmente, iniciaron un noviazgo. En 1954, cuando fue dado de baja con honores del ejército, Luis se fue a la ciudad de Nueva York y en unas semanas se casaron. Mientras vivían en la ciudad de Nueva York, nació su primera hija, Ángela del Carmen, en 1955. Poco después se mudaron a Puerto Rico, donde Luis trabajó para General Electric. Durante este tiempo, Luis y Nelly tuvieron a su segunda hija, Arlene Militza, nacida en 1959.

En un viaje de vacaciones a Panamá, Luis quedó encantado con el país y su cultura que decidió quedarse a vivir allí. Inmediatamente fue empleado por la División Electrónica de la Compañía del Canal de Panamá. Trabajó para la Compañía del Canal de Panamá, sirviéndola durante 20 años hasta su jubilación en 1980. Luis disfrutó mucho de su trabajo que le dio diferentes oportunidades para experimentar el terreno y la cultura de Panamá. Desde estar a bordo de un barco durante las 8 a 10 horas que tomó atravesar el canal mientras trabajaba en los sistemas electrónicos de un barco hasta ir a las cimas de las altas montañas trabajando en las antenas que guiaban a los barcos que cruzaban el istmo, le encantaba todo.

Durante su estancia en Panamá, se sumó una tercera hija a su familia, María del Carmen, nacida en 1963. En 1967 se sumó otro miembro a la familia, un hijo, Luis Carlos.

Después de su retiro de la empresa del Canal de Panamá, Luis y su familia se mudaron a la Florida. Fue contratado por el departamento de policía de Coral Gables, Florida, para trabajar en sus sistemas de comunicación electrónica. Trabajó para ellos hasta jubilarse en 1993.

A Luis le sobreviven sus tres hijos con Enelda (Nelly): Ángela del Carmen Alcaide, Luis Carlos Alcaide y Arlene Militza Donaldson, y una cuarta hija Awilda Milagros Alcaide Rodriguez; ocho nietos Michelle Militza Bustamante (esposo Ricardo Espinosa), Rebecca Ann Theart (esposo Ralph Theart), David Ivan Bustamante (esposa Laura Bustamante), Michael David Donaldson, Katrina Nicole Donaldson (esposo Matthwew Watkins) Isaac Guadalupe Alcaide (esposa Jessica Flores de Guadalupe, Gladimar Guadalupe Alcaide, Carlos Ruben Guadalupe Alcaide; once bisnietos Joshua Guadalupe Flores(22),  Ananis Guadalupe Flores(18), Sophia Theart (13), Ricardo Espinosa (9) Ivan Bustamante (9), Isaiah Theart (8), Mateo Espinosa (7), Ethan Bustamante (6), Zoe Theart (5), Noah Bustamante (3), e Issac Theart (2).

Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, sus 8 hermanos, su esposa Enelda Alcaide Sánchez, su hija María del Carmen Alcaide y su nieto, Iván Antonio Bustamante.

Luis será incinerado y según sus deseos se dispersarán sus cenizas.

Una celebración de vida se llevará a cabo el jueves 17 de agosto de 2023 a las 6:00 p. m.

Luis Antonio Alcaide Santiago, 94, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, in Tamarac, Florida.

Luis was born in La Vega, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on December 13^th, 1928, to Jose Alcaide Cordero and Maria del Carmen Santiago Alcaide. His parents, coming from Hatillo, Puerto Rico, had gone to Santo Domingo where they had a farm. Due to political unrest and persecution by the government they fled back to their native town of Hatillo in 1931.

After finishing high school, Luis enlisted in the Army and served for 4 years. During this time, he started corresponding via letters with one of his sister’s roommates while she lived in New York City.  Though Luis and Enelda, lovingly know as Nelly to many, (native of Chitre, Republic of Panama) had not met personally they started a courtship. In 1954, when he was honorably discharged from the Army, Luis went to New York City and within weeks they were married. While living in New York City their first child, Angela del Carmen, was born in 1955.  Shortly afterwards they moved to Puerto Rico where Luis worked for General Electric. During this time Luis and Nelly had their second child Arlene Militza, born in 1959.

On a vacation trip to Panama, Luis became enchanted with the country and its culture that he decided to stay and live there. He immediately was employed by the Electronics Division of the Panama Canal Company. He worked for the Panama Canal company, serving them for 20 years until his retirement in 1980. Luis thoroughly enjoyed his job which gave him different opportunities to experience the terrain and culture of Panama. From being onboard a ship for the 8 to 10 hours it took to traverse the canal while working on a ship’s electronic systems to going to the high mountain tops working on the antennas that guided the ships crossing the isthmus, he loved it all.

During his stay in Panama, a third child was added to their family, Maria del Carmen, was born in 1963.  In 1967 another member was added to the family, a son, Luis Carlos.

After his retirement from the Panama Canal company, Luis and his family moved to Florida. He was hired by the Coral Gables, Florida, police department working on their electronic communication systems. He worked for them until retiring in 1993

Luis is survived by his three children with Enelda (Nelly): Angela del Carmen Alcaide, Luis Carlos Alcaide, and Arlene Militza Donaldson, and fourth child Awilda Alcaide (Isaac Guadalupe); eight grandchildren Michelle Militza Bustamante (husband Ricardo Espinosa), Rebecca Ann Theart (husband Ralph Theart), David Ivan Bustamante (wife Laura Bustamante), Michael David Donaldson, Katrina Nicole Donaldson (husband Matthew Watkins), Isaac Guadalupe Alcaide (wife Jessica Flores de Guadalupe), Gladimar Guadalupe Alcaide, Carlos Ruben Guadalupe Alcaide ; eleven great-grandchildren Joshua Guadalupe Flores (22), Ananis Guadalupe Flores(18), Sophia Theart (13), Ricardo Espinosa (9),  Ivan Bustamante (9), Isaiah Theart (8), Mateo Espinosa (7),  Ethan Bustamante (6), Zoe Theart (5), Noah Bustamante (3), and  Issac Theart (2).

Luis is preceded in death by his parents, all 8 of his siblings, his wife Enelda Alcaide Sanchez, his daughter Maria del Carmen Alcaide, and his grandson, Ivan Antonio Bustamante.

Luis will be cremated, and his ashes dispersed as per his wishes.

A celebration of life will be held Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 6:00 pm at
