Luis Diaz

June 16, 1924 — January 10, 2019

With great sadness, the family of Luis Diaz Frey announces his passing at age 94. Luis was the loving widower of Gisela Rey Diaz, father of Gisela, Alina, Luisela (deceased), and Maria de los Angeles; father-in-law of Agustin and Pedro; grandfather to Alberto, Rafael, Ricardo, Alejandro and wife Keeley, and Christian; with a very special place in his heart for Maria Carolina, Agustin Jose (deceased), Paul, Daniel, Isabela and their children. He will also be remembered with love by countless family members and friends. He was predeceased by his father Luis Diaz Sanchez and his mother Maria Valentina Frey Gallego.

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1924, he migrated with his family to Trinidad & Tobago in 1961. After nearly six years the family moved to Venezuela, where he lived thirty-eight years till their move to Weston, Florida in 2005.

At 16, Luis started his lifelong banking career at his beloved The Royal Bank of Canada in Cuba, until his retirement in Venezuela. He was treasurer of the Association of Cuban Public Accountants in Venezuela, and of Casa Cuba, where he was a tireless contributor to his community and church. In Puerto Rico and Florida, he took part in many charitable and social associations that were very dear to him.

Luis was an extremely outgoing and jovial person who loved to make new friends -some of which he then lost while grilling them at his passion: dominoes. He was also famous for his formidable dancing skills and stamina at social gatherings, where Gisela managed his humongous “dancing card”.

A very warm and loving person, Luis always put his family above all else. He made us laugh with his “dad jokes” and his repetitive renditions of “I couldn’t sleep a wink last night…” whatever the occasion.
