Marie Gagliano Mitchell Oh…..What a Life! 1914-2022 Marie was born on December 28, 1914, in Brooklyn, New York to Anthony Gagliano and Katherine Sabella Gagliano. Her parents immigrated from Sicily, Italy in 1904 where they began their life in America. With the passing of her mother at an early age, Marie was raised by her beloved grandmother, Maria. As a child, she helped her grandmother in the family corner market. After high school, Marie attended school at Brooklyn State Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. She continued to work there for many years. In 1941, Marie married Edward Mitchell. Together they moved to Key West, Florida. During the war, Ed worked as a Master Electrician at Key West Naval Base where they welcomed their eldest child. Afterwards, they returned to New York where they had three more children. They loved South Florida, ultimately deciding to move to North Miami in 1954. Together they raised their four children in a house full of love and laughter, creating tons of wild and crazy memories. In her forties, Marie acquired her Real Estate Brokers License and opened an office in North Miami. As a brilliant and successful businesswoman and property investor, she bought and sold countless homes over her 40-year career. Marie and Ed were devoted to St. James Catholic Church and volunteered at every opportunity. Upon moving to Sunrise, in 1978, they became dedicated parishioners of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Marie became President of the Women’s Guild and she remarkably coordinated fashion shows, luncheons and church bazaars till the age of 98. Marie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Anthony and Katherine, beloved husband, Edward, dearest daughter, Peggy and three brothers; Andrew, Jimmy and Frankie, who adored her. She is survived by her three children, Edward Jr. (Bess) of Maitland, Kate Masi (Mike) of Plantation, John of Sunrise, son-in-law Robert Webber of Sunrise, countless grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Throughout Marie’s life she inspired everyone to do their best to make a difference every day. She was an incredible woman who survived Polio, Tuberculosis, Spanish Influenza, the Depression, several significant Wars and COVID. Marie’s kindness and compassion will be remembered by many. She had boundless love for her family and friends. Her sense of humor, positive attitude, faith and gratitude contributed to her long and wonderful life.
