Marie Ursery, wife, mother, matriarch, extraordinary friend, and loving spirit passed away on December 3, 2018. She left us peacefully at her residence in Sunrise, Florida. She was in her 81st year. Born in Detroit, Michigan to Everett and Paralee (Gilliam) Hall on September 19, 1937, Marie witnessed incredible changes to the world, having attended Indianapolis Public School 87 during segregation and graduating from the integrated Shortridge High School (Indianapolis) in 1954. Inspired by the power of education to change hearts and minds, Marie became an educator. She earned a Bachelors degree from Indiana University and a Masters degree in Education from Butler University. For thirty-five years until retiring in 1997, Marie dedicated herself to the students and families of Indianapolis Public Schools. In 1992, she married her loving husband, Robert Ursery. As a result of the union, Marie and her sons, Barry and Gregory, joyfully welcomed the addition of Yolanda, Debi, Tish’Chara, and Robin as daughters and sisters. In 2012, Marie and Robert moved to Sunrise, Florida. Predeceased by her parents, Everett and Paralee Hall. Marie lived a full life as a beautiful mother, adoring wife, lifelong educator, faithful steward having been an active member of Barnes United Methodist Church (Indianapolis, IN) and Plantation United Methodist Church (Sunrise, FL). Marie was exceptionally generous and hospitable. She was known for her tender sweet spirit, beautiful smile and humble nature. Marie was loved universally. The best way to remember Marie is as a woman who always wanted everyone to “love one another and be happy.” Her loving husband, Robert; sons Barry (Rhonda) and Gregory Collins; stepdaughters Yolanda Ursery, Debi Ursery, Cathy Tish’Chara Ursery, and Robin (Eseosa) Elaiho; Grandchildren Brandon, Braelyn, Benjamin, Evan and Nadia; and a host of family and friends survive Marie.
