Montie Lesley “Timer” Welch, Jr., age 81, of Plantation, passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
Montie, the son of Montie L. and Evelyn (Webb) Welch, Sr., whom both preceded him in death was born in Harp Township, DeWitt County, Illinois on December 9, 1940. He married Ana Leticia Martinez Torres on December 22, 1968.
Montie served the United States Army from 1962 through April 1984 and rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Level Three where he served the Criminal Investigation Command (CID) as a Special Agent. As Team Chief, he was responsible for supervising the economic criminal information center within the USACIDC District, responsible for supporting Army Commanders with thorough felony criminal investigations. He received the Army Commendation Medal (2d Oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award), National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon with “4” and was a .38 Caliber Pistol Marksman. In May of 1984 he earned his Bachelor’s of Arts Degree from Columbia College.
After retiring from the military and settling in Florida with his family, Montie’s experience in the Army led him to several security jobs, most notably Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant in Homestead and his most recent role as security supervisor in Kindred Hospital in Fort Lauderdale. In this role, he made friends with doctors as well as visitors and was awarded a certificate of appreciation that he was so proud of Montie was a valued employee wherever he worked but his main source of happiness was his family.
Montie loved listening to music, his favorites being bluegrass and country. He also enjoyed playing the fiddle, guitar and singing to his family. He loved to cook and always made sure something was prepared whether it be big Saturday breakfasts of eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy to traditional holiday feasts of turkey or ham and homemade noodles. He was known for his potato salad. He loved scratch off tickets, board games, especially Kismet, trivia shows, watching British TV, crossword puzzles and Sudoku.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Ana Welch of Plantation; son Gary G. of Colorado, daughters Janis L. (husband, Gerald Bernard) of Wellington, FL and Ellen L. (husband Charles East, Jr.) of Port St. Lucie, FL and seven grandchildren, Justin M., Daisy M., James A., Isabella G., Christian C., Lauren C., and Luke A. He is also survived by his five sisters, Delores (William “Bill” 2019), Linda, Sheryl (Ray), Nancy (Dave) and Lana (Larry) and several nieces and nephews.
Grandson Jakob D., nephew Joseph L. Debauche and siblings, Randy Welch, Wilma Sharp, Russell Welch and Richard Welch preceded him in death.
Visitation: Family and friends are invited to a memorial honoring Montie’s life from 5:00P.M. to 7:00 P.M on Monday, October 3, 2022 at T.M. Ralph Funeral Home Sawgrass/Weston located at 371 NW 136th Avenue, Sunrise, FL 33325.
A prayer service will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 10:00 am at T.M. Funeral Home.
Internment with military honors will follow at Caballero Rivero Dade South Cemetery on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, 12:30PM, 14200 SW 117th Avenue, Miami, FL 33186.
