Nancy Patricia Hernandez, 51 (née McGee) passed away peacefully in her home in Plantation, Florida January 24, surrounded by her loved ones. A widow and a mother of two daughters, Nancy courageously and fiercely fought colon cancer for over 4 years.
Nancy was born to Lillian and Edward McGee and raised in Mariners Harbor, Staten Island. The fourth of six children, she was born into a household of forever playmates and friends. She graduated from P.S. 22 and I.S. 51.A creative spirit, Nancy auditioned for and was accepted to LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan, where she graduated with a major in dance. Her love of dance was ignited as a child during her time dancing with Clive Thompson Dance Company. In 1994 Nancy received a bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University with a major in dance and a minor in elementary education. She received her master’s degree in education from Hunter College in 2002.
Between her time at Hofstra and Hunter, Nancy sought adventure. She traveled to France and England, lived in Australia where she bungee jumped and drove in the outback, not letting the fact that she did not have a driver’s license deter her. She danced and sang at Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Broadway and taught elementary school in Queens. Then, kismet struck on the day Nancy walked into the Nickelodeon Diner in New York City. It was there she met Ivan Hernandez, and life was never the same again. The two soulmates married in 2000, and relocated to Plantation, Florida in 2002. Nancy gave birth to two beautiful daughters, and she and Ivan liked and loved each other until the day Ivan died in 2015. Most recently, Nancy was the school librarian at St. David Catholic School, where she worked for 16 years.
Nancy lived her life with grace and peace, made friends easily wherever she went, was a voracious reader, and loved book clubs. Nancy continued to nurture her passion for dance throughout her life and took yoga and ballroom dancing classes up until a couple of months before her death. A role model not only for her girls, but for anyone who seeks to remain steadfast and resilient no matter what obstacles are placed on their path, she will be greatly missed by anyone who met her.
She is predeceased by her husband, Ivan Hernandez. And is survived by their daughters, Christina, and Chloe.
She is also survived by her Dad, Edward McGee, her mother-in-law, Cecilia Hernandez. her siblings, Maureen Van Dusky (Thomas), Marie Robledo (Ignacio), Lt.
