Peggie A. Latson was born to Mattie and Joseph Alexander in Fort Pierce, Florida on February 14, 1940. She was baptized at an early age and attended Blessed Martin Catholic School. Later, she attended Allen High School in Asheville, North Carolina where she excelled in basketball and the performing arts. She also participated in Student Government. After graduation, Peggie attended Bennett College for two years and continued on to attend her beloved alma mater, Fisk University, in Nashville, Tennessee. It was in Nashville where Peggie became involved with the National Civil Rights Movement. Peggie participated in student protests, including lunch counter sit-ins. She was most proud of her studies of non- violent protest under the tutelage of Doctors Martin Luther King and James Lawson. She graduated from college in 1961 with a B.A. in English and began teaching back home in Fort Pierce, Florida. It was there she met her future husband, Willie Latson, Jr. and they married on May 16, 1962. From that union, three children were born: Lisa Simone, William Renard, and Terri Nicole (deceased). Peggie later began to teach in the Broward County School System and after receiving a Master’s Degree from the University of Miami, she became an Administrator. She retired in 1996 after working for thirty-five years educating children. Peggie had a great love for reading, gardening, home design and most of all, the children in her family. She planned numerous family trips and activities, sponsored Miami Heat Camp attendance and attended countless choir performances, athletic competitions and other varied activities the children in her family participated in. She was also the unofficial Head Coach and General Manager for the Miami Heat Basketball Team.
