Sharon Diane Van Matre Thomas, died Thursday, August 6, 2020, at the age of 81.
She was born to Elmer T. and Ruby Maxine Van Matre, in Anderson, Indiana, January 1939. Sharon attended school in Anderson, graduating from Anderson High School. She attended Purdue University, where she met and later married, Kenneth Thomas of Uniontown, Kentucky. They wed in 1958 and had four children.
Sharon is survived by her four children, Elizabeth Thomas, Daniel Thomas, Matthew Thomas, and Steven Thomas; two grandchildren, Mary and Carolyn Thomas; and her brother, Steven Van Matre.
The Thomas family relocated from Detroit, Michigan to Plantation, Florida in 1964. Sherry, as her friends new her, became an active member of the community for many decades. In the 1960s and 1970s, she was an integral part of the “Plantation Junior Women’s Club”, often performing in the annual show held at War Memorial Auditorium. She worked in local real estate several decades before opening her dream business, a retail store in Plantation called “The Country Cottage”. Sherry Thomas was a dedicated mother, survivor, supremely creative decorator, and a lover of nature and the outdoors.
A celebration of her life will be held 2021.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sherry’s loving memory to the “Institute for Earth Education.”
